Like many American composers, I wanted to make a musical statement for celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States. “Our Sacred Honor” reflects my thoughts and feelings of our country- where we are going and where we have been. We have a lot for which to be proud, a lot for which to be ashamed. We must wrestle with this reality, and, for me, anything that musically ignored this reality seemed inappropriate and dishonest. However, in the midst of this wrestling, I want to convey hope. I have hope, I believe that we will come out of this particularly divisive time we find ourselves in, with a greater sense of unity and purpose. I truly hope that these things are conveyed and heard in my music.
The score dedication reads "Written for the 250th Anniversary of the United States of America, and our continuous striving to form 'a more perfect union.'"
