Divertimento was composed in honor of my youngest child, Benjamin. I wanted to capture his essence musically. Benjamin can be mischievous, sweet, and intense, and these traits drive the form of the piece. Stylistically, the piece is inspired by the Neoclassical composers of the mid-20th Century.
A “soliloquy” is literally the idea of talking to oneself. As I was writing this, I had no formal structure in mind, no specific motivic development or harmonic devices, but as I started sketching ideas, these things began to come together. I found myself free to write more for the people in mind, rather than any overarching formal or programmatic plan.
For B-Flat Clarinet, Viola, Cello, Piano. Composed for the wedding of two friends. The melodic material is very angular yet lyrical with extended yet accessible harmonies.
