Sonata for Trumpet and Piano

Commissioned by Christopher J. O'Hara.

This Sonata is an exercise in the classical form of the same name. The movements are titled only by the metronome marking, which is constant in each movement with no tempo alterations. The piece features no programmatic or extra-musical imagery, like much of the music from the Classical and Neoclassical periods.

The first movement is a standard Sonata form, with an Exposition with two themes, a Development and Recapitulation.

The second movement is a contrasting slow movement, featuring a simple motive against stark, yet rich harmonies.

The third movement features a Rondo form, structured in a traditional 'ABACA.' Stylistically, this is the most eclectic of the three movements.

I'm grateful to my old friend Chris O'Hara for commissioning this piece, and honored that he included it in one of his doctoral recital. I look forward to many more collaborations through the years.
