“Cinema Suite”: Consortium for Concert Band (Grade 4)

“If you are scoring a scene for a man on a horse galloping away - you don't score the gallop but you score the fear of the rider.” - Jerry Goldsmith

I stumbled on the above quote from the legendary film composer, and to me it captures the essence of what makes great film music. There was a time when I wanted to pursue film music as a career, and while that desire did change, my love for great film music has always been with me. Not only has it been a major influence on me and my musical journey, but I have spoken to countless musicians who have been similarly affected by it. With this context in mind, Cinema Suite is a tribute to film music. In preparing the music, it is my hope that students and directors will have conversations about how this music (and music in general) communicates ideas and emotions.
