Mr. Keller and Smoky Valley High School were part of the consortium of 10 schools that co-commissioned the work last summer, and I was thrilled to have such an historically strong Kansas band program be part of the commissioning. Each consortium has multiple buy-in levels that take into consideration budgets and time commitments to each project. Here is a brief overview of each.

The first is a multi-movement work for brass quintet will be released in early May of 2024. The total length will be around 10-12 minutes, and will explore various timbres and textures of the brass instruments. For ensembles that join early in the composing process, I would welcome input and suggestions. My youngest is a tuba player, and gave me the idea for this one. In fact, he said he is already committed to be a paying member! This will be around a grade 4 solo, aiming to contribute a piece to the tuba repertoire that would be ideal for strong high school players, college players, and any other tubist that would like to help create a new work. Click here to learn more and to register.

The Waves and Winds Still Know will be a work for solo flute with string accompaniment. I will also create a version for flute with piano accompaniment, which will be a reduction of the original string parts. The overall themes of the piece is hope in the face of adversity, perseverance, resolve, endurance. Click here to learn more and to register.

If you are able and interested in being part of any of these projects I would love to work with you! If you're unfamiliar with a consortium in the context of commissioning new music, it basically is a way of sharing a commission with other ensembles and performers. This benefits the musicians, as they don't have to carry the commission fee alone, and it benefits the composer, because he/she gets more performances! It's really a win-win.

This consortium is for Incarnation, which will be for SATB choir and concert band. My newest piece for string orchestra is now available. Persevering is meant to convey a sense of continuing on through adversity. The COVID-19 Pandemic was the impetus for writing this piece, but the sentiment certainly expands beyond that to different times and types of adversity.

Pepper Editor's Choice
I recently learned that my concert band piece Gateway Overture was name an Editor's Choice selection by J.W. Pepper, one of the largest sheet music distributors in the world. This is my sixth Pepper Editor's Choice selection, and second for band. While it is an honor under any circumstance, I am especially proud of this, because I composed Gateway Overture for my junior high alma mater, Blackhawk Middle School (Bensenville, IL), and premiered it (amazingly) 30 years to the day that I started attending the school! Included in her repertoire is two of my newest works, where she will be accompanied on harp by our daughter! (This is peak proud hubby and proud dad stuff right here!)

Be Thou My Vision, for flute and harp, was written as a gift for Sarah, she requested this shortly after our daughter started learning harp, and I finally made good on the promise. :D

Simple Soliloquy, also for flute and harp, is the first concert chamber work I've written that includes harp, and it is a different piece for me; I wouldn't call it "contrapuntal," but the two parts are very independent of each other. The piece creates a mood, or atmosphere, that represents a mood of being lost in one's own thoughts.

If you're in central Kansas on the 26th, we'd love to see you at the recital! It is free, and in Richert Auditorium, in the Flaming Center for the Arts at Tabor College.
R. No, we're not past it yet, but we will be, and when we get there, it will be an overwhelming time of reunion, joy, hope...but we will also have to remember and mourn what was lost. Through prominent melodies and driving rhythms, Hope and a New Dawn tries to convey just that.

This was a year in the making, a stressful and difficult year. I moved by myself last fall to begin my new position at Tabor College. I saw my family every few weeks, and it was very tough to be apart from them for so long. Then COVID hit, and I don't need to go in to details about that...

So anyway, I'm so happy that my family is finally all together once again, and for good, and we are renting a lovely house in Newton, Kansas. No one is going back after a few days or a week, I don't have to leave them after a weekend, we're stuck with each other!

For SATB and piano, I composed this anthem for a consortium of 10 churches a couple years back, and I was quite pleased with how it turned out, and was thrilled when CG accepted it for publication. They give the following description:

This exciting anthem for Christ the King Sunday is a stunner from start to finish! Composer Christopher Teichler sets this familiar hymn text to a lilting new tune, which bursts with joyful praise.
On Wednesday, November 6, I went back to my old junior high in the Chicago suburbs for the premier of my newest band piece, Gateway Overture. Blackhawk Middle School (Bensenville, IL) and director Mr. William Winters commissioned the piece, which included some video chats with the students in order to get to know them and the kind of piece that would most interest them. I took suggestions, listened to pieces they previously enjoyed playing, and based most of my musical decisions off of their feedback. It was a fun process! When I went to visit the school, I was able to work with some of the players on my piece and the two others they were performing on the concert. It was a fun process!

I will continue to work with some of the students in the next couple of weeks, as I will be giving them feedback on their own compositions/arrangements! More than selling music (which would be great!), I'm hoping to make more connections with the music ministers that attend. They come from all over the U.S. and from several denominations. I'm particularly interested in learning how many churches offer music education and appreciation in some form to their congregations and communities. This could manifest itself in several different ways, like concert series', music academies or schools, community ensembles like children's choirs or theater productions, etc. Church music flourishes when children through adults are engaged and involved, and we seem to be in a steady decline in this engagement, leaving it up to only a few. So, I'm curious to see if others are thinking the same!

I'll report back later...
R. I love this; these are great insights into how a choir serves a congregation in worship. Here's a snippet:

"In worship, instead of allowing the choir to give us something, we invite the choir to sing in our stead. We invite these talented and faithful people to offer our prayers with their mouths, because they have skills for this kind of musical prayer that most of us do not. In other words, in worship, when the choir sings, we sing too, with our hearts and our minds if not with our lips."

For next Easter, I'm putting together a consortium for "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," for SATB, Brass Quartet (2 Tpts, 2 Tbns), Timpani and Organ. As a composer, one of my goals is to help Easter church music repertoire catch up to Christmas, and this is a step in that process. This setting will be ideal for church music programs that are traditional/liturgical in form, as well as Christian high schools and colleges.

This can be a time of optimism and hope, and I am putting together a consortium to commission a new work that will capture these positive ideals. Certainly, music can be a powerful agent in communicating these and other positive emotions, but more than that: music-making builds community, because it teaches us how to listen, about accountability, sacrifice, and being part of something greater than oneself. Music can help teach these things in a way and to a depth that few others can.

All three of these are performed by the MidCities Chamber Singers, for whom I've had the pleasure of being the composer-in-residence for the past 3 years. I was recently asked by music director and conductor D.J. Bulls to stick around for another year, and I'm excited to do so! I love working with this group, and if you listen to these recordings you'll know why!

Thanks!
R.
