R. Christopher Teichler, Composer

Concert Band, 2010

Story

Commissioned by Blackhawk Middle School, Bensenville, IL. This piece has a gentle latin feel to it, representing a calm and peaceful evening. It is also a sort of elegy for my old neighborhood which no longer exists, due to the expansion of O'Hare International Airport (Chicago, IL).

Story

Composed in memory of my high school band director, Mr. Fred Lewis. Mr. Lewis was director of bands at Fenton High School (Bensenville, IL) for almost 50 years, leaving a legacy of musical excellence inspiring hundreds of students to love making music.

Story

I. March II. Meditation III. Metamorphosis SOJOURN basically describes a spiritual journey. Beginning with a pompous and arrogant "March," continuing through a "Meditation," or prayer, asking God 'Why?' The piece ends with a "Metamorphosis,"  the change into something new. Themes recur throughout the three movements. An extended solo for Alto Saxophone occurs in the second movement. SOJOURN was part of my doctoral dissertation, and I was selected by composer Mark Camphouse to be part of the 2006 Young Composer Mentor Project, where "Meditation" was performed and recorded.

**This is a Three-Movement set, movements are not sold individually.

Story

It is common to have a toast "to absent friends" at ceremonies or receptions. While not limited to military functions, it is in this context that the toast often seems the most special and appropriate. This heartfelt piece is a tribute to those who have served in the armed forces and are no longer with us.
